WE ALL PLAY SEVERAL ROLES in life. But suppose you have decided to play a role that is not appropriate for you, or beyond your abilities. If you were an actor, you would have ruined the play for the spectators, the other actors, and yourself.

So consider carefully what projects you engage in and whether you are suitable for them, and by the same token be sure not to neglect some other projects for which you are, in fact, well suited.

I ASSUME THAT YOU ARE careful, in everything you do, not to hurt yourself or, to be specific, your body. You don’t go around being careless about nails getting into your shoes, and you walk in such a way as not to sprain your ankle.

So why are you so careless about your ruling faculty? Why do you let it be offended and polluted by all sorts of garbage, instead of guarding it against assaults from without, and taking care from within to sharpen it as much as possible?
